Christmas Tree Ornament

In this step-by-step knitting tutorial Madeline from Knitting House Square will show you how to knit and assemble a festive Christmas Tree Ornament!

This ornament is knit in the round using magic loop and is a great project to use up fingering weight mini skeins or left over yarn from another project.

Materials

Yarn: Fingering Weight (also called sock weight, superfine or #1)

  • Main Tree Color: 28 yds (26 m)

  • Tree Trunk: 3 yds (2.7 m)

Needle: US 2 (2.75 mm) 24” or longer Circular Knitting Needle for magic loop (or double pointed needles) Amazon

Additional Materials

  • Handful stuffing/fill

  • Tapestry Needle Amazon

  • Scissors

Abbreviations

* Repeat the pattern displayed between the *s

SSK (slip, slip, knit): Slip one stitch as if to knit from the left to right needle, slip another stitch as if to knit from the left to right needle, pass the two stitches back over to the left needle, knit the two stitches together through the back loop

K2T (knit two together): Insert the right knitting needle through the next two stitches on the left needle as if to knit, knit the two stitches together

Cast-On & Increases

Cast-On

Cast-on 62 stitches using the backward loop cast-on and set up to join in the round using magic loop.

Pattern Repeat

Round 1: Knit across the round

*Note if you are adding beads, refer to the chart at the bottom of this tutorial for bead placement (beads start on the first Round 2)

Round 2: Knit across the round

Round 3: *SSK, knit until 2 stitches remain on the knitting needle (half way point of magic loop round), K2T* repeat between the *s for the second half of the round

Repeat Rounds 1 - 3 until there are three stitches left on each knitting needle (6 stitches total in the round).

Knit 1 more round before working the finishing step below.

Finishing

*Slip the first two stitches as if to knit, knit 1 stitch, pass the two slipped stitches up over and off of the knit stitch (2 stitch decrease)* repeat between the *s for the second half of the round.

Cut your yarn leaving an 8” (20 cm) tail. Use the tapestry needle to thread the yarn tail through the remaining two stitches.

Tree Trunk

Use the same knitting needle that was used for the tree and the yarn you selected for the tree trunk.

Cast On: Cast on 12 stitches and join in the round for magic loop.

Knitting: Knit 8 rounds total.

Cast off all stitches.
